Director of Finance & Operations
Location: Remote
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer
Position Summary
One Firefly is seeking a Director of Finance and Operations to serve as the financial engine and operational oversight leader of the company. This is a high-visibility, high-impact role on our Executive Management Team (EMT) that sits at the intersection of financial discipline and operational efficiency in a service-based business where human capital is our largest and important asset.
In this role, you will own the day-to-day financial operations of the business, driving forecasting and financial clarity. You will also provide operational oversight to our Project Management team and serve as the primary financial liaison to our fractional CFO.
This is an ideal opportunity for a sharp, financial-forward individual with service industry experience who is ready to step into a true leadership seat and drive meaningful impact.
What You’ll Do
-
Financial Operations & Forecasting
- Own and maintain accurate, timely financial reporting, delivering clear and actionable insight across the P&L.
- Build, maintain and continuously improve rolling forecasts (revenue, margin and cash flow).
- Monitor daily cash flow and proactively manage our financial position, balancing liabilities, capital expenditures, and owner distributions.
- Drive the annual budgeting process and maintain ongoing budget-vs-actual tracking across all departments.
- Partner with Sales and Operations to ensure pipeline, onboarding and churn are accurately reflected in forecasts.
- Serve as primary liaison to the fractional CFO; preparing materials, surfacing risks, and ensuring clean data for strategic decision making.
- Partner with external CPA on tax-related matters.
- Provide financial coaching and oversight to the Accounting team; serve as backup for transactional support when needed.
-
Project Management Oversight
As a service-based business, human capital is our single largest cost driver. You will oversee the Project Management team with a financial and efficiency lens.
- Lead and develop the Project Management team leads — providing coaching, goal-setting, accountability and performance oversight.
- Ensure the team's labor and resource models are functioning effectively and that capacity decisions align with financial targets and forecast assumptions.
- Monitor utilization rates, billable-to-non-billable ratios, and labor margin across service lines.
- Identify and escalate risks early, before they impact financial performance.
- Partner with the Executive Vice President to align labor efficiency with service quality and client outcomes.
-
Executive & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Serve as an active member of our Executive Management Team (EMT).
- Partner with department leaders to drive budget accountability and financial decision-making.
- Provide financial guidance on client-related matters that have cost or margin implications.
- Support People Operations on payroll-related financial approvals and workforce cost planning.
- Proactively identify risks, gaps and opportunities; this role is expected to run toward problems, not wait for them to surface.
What You Bring
- 7+ years of progressive finance experience, with at least 3 years at a Controller, Finance Manager or similar level.
- Background in a services-based business (agency, consulting, staffing or managed services strongly preferred).
- Proven track record owning a financial close process and delivering clean, timely reporting.
- Experience leading and developing team members, including coaching, performance management, and driving accountability.
- Strong understanding of service business economics, including utilization, billable rates, capacity planning, and labor margin.
- Proven ability to build and maintain financial models, forecasts, and budget-vs-actual analyses.
- Strong communicator who can translate financial data into clear guidance for non-finance stakeholders.
- Tactical and strategic use of AI to improve productivity and financial processes.
- High ownership mentality; treats the company's financial health as personally important.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field; CPA is a plus.
- Experience with common agency accounting platforms (QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar).
What We Offer
Compensation: Total target cash compensation of $110,000 – $140,000 (Base + Performance Bonus).
- A remote-first culture (Remote since 2015!).
- Private Health, Dental, and Vision 100% paid for employee only.
- 10 Paid Holidays and increasing PTO plus Volunteer days.
- Simple IRA with company match.
- Bonus opportunities tied to clear performance metrics.
- Personal Development Allowance.
- Company provided computer and office supply funds.
- Paid Parental Leave and in-person team events.
