Honeywell vs. Icontrol and Alarm.com
Is Honeywell justified in their suit against Icontrol and Alarm.com? Honeywell’s closed architecture seems to be a problem of their own making, but a monopoly on the security space could make it very difficult for new, innovative companies to get a foothold in the industry.
With around 70% of the market potentially dominated by the results of the Icontrol and Alarm.com merger, one thing all of the commentators can agree on is that the prospect of such a monopoly is disconcerting, to say the least. All eyes are on the results of this case.
A $6.3 billion write-down is certainly newsworthy, but what factors led to this business mishap? One theory is that Toshiba didn’t allocate enough of their profits to R&D. After all, when was the last time you saw an innovative Toshiba product? Another theory is that Toshiba’s write-down is not an isolated incident, but rather a symptom of a larger issue with Japan’s innovation in general.
The big question is this: if Toshiba were to fail, what effect would it have on the residential market? As Tim Albright puts it, there simply wouldn’t be one.
Coolest Kickstarter Tech
An interesting AV product has hit Kickstarter. Caavo is a product that is supposedly capable of connecting your TVs, streaming systems, and voice control—all for just $399. But is this sleek “all-in-one” hub all it’s cracked up to be? The consensus appears to be that Caavo very well may be a Kickstarter pipedream that won’t be around a year from now, but there’s no denying that it’s a cool product that solves a clear problem for a lot of people—if it actually delivers on its marketing claims. Caavo appeals to the not-so-niche audience of people who aren’t particularly tech-savvy and can’t afford an expensive automation solution.
